Description
Cream linen edged in black, with hand embroidery scattered down the front rather than arranged into a border. The scattering is deliberate. A perfectly regular motif announces a machine even when no machine was involved.
The caftan is cut in one uninterrupted line from shoulder to hem, the way caftans have been made here for generations. Nothing interrupts the fall, which is why the shape works on bodies that agree about very little else.
Linen improves with washing. This is the rare garment that is better in its third year than its first, provided you keep it out of a tumble dryer. There is a longer argument for that in the journal, but the short version is air and patience.
The most worn piece in the collection, by some distance.
